IAS 2017 Important Dates

  • Last date for submission of application                  17th March, 2017
  • IAS Preliminary Examination Date                          18th June, 2017
  • IAS Main Examination Date                                   28th October, 2017

Pattern of UPSC - CSE
The UPSC CSE consists of 3 stages and these are Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam and Personality Test/Interview.
Stage – I
The IAS Preliminary exam (objective / multiple choice questions type) has two papers:
  • Paper - I (General Studies: 200 Marks)
  • Paper - II (CSAT : 200 Marks)
Note:
  • The Paper II is now of only qualifying nature and its mark is not counted while making the merit list. However, it is mandatory for the candidate to score minimum 33 per cent in this paper to qualify the Prelims exam.
  • In both, Paper-I and Paper-II for each wrong answer there is a negative marking of 1/3rd of the allotted marks of that question.
Stage – II
The second stage of the civil services is IAS Mains Exam (subjective or descriptive type) and it consists 9 papers which are divided as given below:
  • Essay – 250 Marks
  • English – 300 Marks [Qualifying]
  • General Studies Paper I – 250 Marks
  • General Studies Paper II – 250 Marks
  • General Studies Paper III – 250 Marks
  • General Studies Paper IV – 250 Marks
  • Optional Subject Paper I – 250 Marks
  • Optional Subject Paper II – 250 Marks
  • Language Paper – 300 Marks [Qualifying]
Stage – III
  • Personality Test/Interview - 275 Marks
Prelims Syllabus
Paper – I
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • History of India and Indian National Movement
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc
  • Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change
  • General Science
Paper – II
  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
