APRIL 2016 CURRENT AFFAIRS ( PART-1 )

  • Kachhabali village in Bhim tehsil of Rajsamand district has become the first in Rajasthan to liquor free village.
  • The Union Government has launched the Startup India portal and mobile application. It was launched by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP).
  • The fourth edition of Nuclear Security Summit began in Washington, United States to discuss a gamut of issues pertaining to nuclear security. First summit was held in 2010 in Washington.
  • India has signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States for setting up Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in India. LIGO is a large-scale physics experiment and observatory to detect gravitational waves. It will be third LIGO interferometer in the world and it is expected to be functional by 2023. Presently there are twin LIGO Observatories at Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana.
  • Indian scientists have developed an eco-friendly biopolymer using nanotechnology for water softening and water purification applications. The eco-friendly biopolymer has been created using a naturally occurring substance, called chitosan.
  • India has been ranked sixth among the world’s Top-Ten largest manufacturing countries in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) 2015 Yearbook report. In this edition of report India has jumped by three positions to sixth position compared to earlier ninth position in the previous report. Top 5 Countries are China, United States, Japan, Germany and South Korea.
  • World’s first White Tiger Safari was inaugurated at Mukundpur in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. The first of its kind safari is situated adjacent to the Mukundpur Zoological Park. It is spread over an area of 25 hectares and has been built at cost of 50 crore rupees.
  • The world’s first public dengue vaccination programme was launched in the Philippines with a French drug Dengvaxia (world’s 1st dengue fever vaccine) to combat mosquito-borne disease. Mexico was first country in the world to approve first-ever Dengvaxia Dengue fever vaccine for the public use and Philippines was the first county in Asia to allow it.
  • The Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangaluru was adjudged as the best Indian university in the first National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). NIRF Survey was the first of its kind of indigenous ranking framework for higher education institutions in the country. It was launched by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in September 2015. The NIRF ranking covers six categories of institutions including universities, engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture and colleges.
  • Every year 5th April is being observed as National Maritime Day of India. 2016 was the 53rd edition of National Maritime Day and the theme was “Ease of doing business in the maritime sector”. The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on 5th April, 1964.
